Internet Safety

The education of internet safety is of the utmost importance to us as educators. Its great to give children new tools to learn but these new tools also come with responsibility. Due to the fact that the internet can be accessed by virtually anyone from anywhere it is important to teach our children a few simple but important rules when using the internet.
For my children the first rule is never give out any personal information (first and last name, home address, telephone number etc.) due to the fact that they never know exactly who is viewing their blog. Also, students should never say anything through a blog that they would be considered inappropriate or that they wouldn't say in the classroom. Students need to use respect when using the internet. Lastly, students are not to use blogging as an aide to bullying another student.
My districts technology polices states that students will be provided to appropriate access of technology tools in the classroom but they will be used with a focus on educational instruction.

  1. Good rules. Since you mention that your district provides "appropriate access" I wonder if they block blogging sites. Unfortunately some districts do. If Blogger is blocked there are other options such ad Edublogs that may work instead.

  2. Hi Dana.
I think that you have created some great rules for the classroom blog. I also agree that respecting one another and using appropriate language is one of the main rules that needs to be set when using a blog in a classroom. Additionally, I think it is so important to talk to the students about online safety and not giving out personal information over the internet. You mentioned that you work in an elementary school? I'm sure that that rule would be even more important for your students then since elementary school students are always so trusting!

  3. Wow personal information rules again! I was so wrong to assume that with all the terrible things happening to students that they already knew this. Students are using facebook, and twitter in middle school , which makes it even more necessary to talk to them about being cautious with their information. Thanks for making me aware of the importance of " maintaining a level of privacy. I also can see how " internet bullying " could be done and will mention it to students as well.
